It's finally time for me to tell you about my favourite brunch spot in KL, if you seen my stories on instagram (wafflewongg), you know I been in love with VCR ever since I first had in in December 2020. It has been around for years and I just never got round to try it out until just a few months ago! And yes I have been missing OUT!

Outside of VCR (Jalan Galloway)

I first visited the branch at Jalan Galloway, which is also their first branch in the heart of KL city! I came here before I started my blog so I didn't take much photos of the interior and exterior of the cafe... so it's located at a corner and you can easily spot it as it is in full black! I read up on their website that the building was built back in 1927 and was built for wardens to stay since it's near Pudu Jail. I'm a sucker for buildings with a history behind it, I love how they gave the building a nice modern twist with its all black + wood + steel style.

Counter

I love their menu, it has a wide variety of brunch food + mains! Their menu is available on their website and the link will be at the end of the blog! It was so hard to pick what to order because I wanted to order EVERYTHINGG on the menu cause everything looks so good! The menu is inspired by Melbourne cafe food while incorporating some local ingredients and flavours hehe. Anyway after a long hard decision, we finally made our decision hehe and went to the counter to order! The staff was really friendly as well and gave great warm service, you can tell they're really passionate in what they do!

Soft Shell Crab Burger (RM 28)

I know there's a huge spread so I'll break it down and talk about it one by one!! Starting off with the soft shell crab burger, as you can see, A STUNNER. The giant crab is super crispy and juicy yet meaty inside with crab meat and crab roe in it!! It had so much flavours in it I don't know how to describe it but it was RICH! The onion jam, tartar sauce, picked cucumber and THAT SUNNY SIDE UP EGG *offt* went all so well together and hold the flavours so well together! The toasted bun was super soft and fluffy too! This dish is rich and a super good savoury burger! I just love everything about it! No words can describe it you just gotta try it for yourself to understand why it’s SO GOOD. and I'm super proud of this shot above, one of my favourite picture I ever took to date hehe, the sun suddenly peaked through the cloudy skies and was shinning perfect on the burger! I actually just realised there's a half eaten sausage right beside it HAHAHA.

VCR Big Breakfast (RM 36) & Pennsylvania's Soul (RM 25)

Next, the VCR Big Breakfast is one of the best big breakfast I have eaten, the sourdough toast was 10/10, it was crusty yet had the perfect airy texture! I'm always on a hunt for good sourdough and I think VCR makes one of the best in town! The scramble eggs were scrambled to perfection, it was so creamy, fluffy and silky at the same time! The house-made chipolata sausage was too good! The lamb bolognese was unlike anything I ever had before, I love the strong distinct lamb taste in it, super flavourful! The beef bacon was so much better than expected, it was really soft and nice with the perfect balance of meat and fat! As you can see from my description, this is yet another perfect dish! I think the high quality ingredients in this dish justify its high price and this is the best big breakfast I ever had in KL!

At the back you can see the Pennsylvania's Soul, which is a savoury potato waffle dish with buttermilk fried chicken + potato waffle+ siracha mayo + thai basil + chrysanthemums syrup! The flavours in this dish didn't disappoint again, it was sweet yet savoury and is one of their best seller too! However I wish the waffle was more crispier to give it that extra texture but the flavourful chicken was the highlight!

Surf' N' Turf (RM 26)

The one on right side is Surf' N' Turf (didn't manage to take a solo shot of it sorrz!), was *CRIESS* so good too, the generous serving of house-cured gravadlax was so thicc and the amount of saltiness from the salmon + herb was perfectly paired with the amazing scramble egg + amazing sourdough! I have read reviews saying their quality has always been maintain for the past few years and that’s so good to hear!

Eating our food halfway and the lighting was perfect

The perfect sun shinning on my latte

I was eating my food halfway and the lighting was too pretty omg if only the sun appear before I started eating!! but yes I am proud of these shots too hehe! So after we had our heavy brunch and was super full, we still needed to try their cakes and coffee because WE HAD TO! Since I was a kid I always say "I always have a second tummy for dessert!" and that is still true to this day!

Naked King (RM 13) & Carrot Cake (RM 13)

We had 2 cakes to share, the first Naked King, a banana cake layered with chocolate ganache + peanut butter, the taste was just alright cause when you take a bite of it, all the elements of the cake just mush together and it wasn’t that significant. Maybe they should have thicker chocolate ganache layered on it! However the Carrot Cake was another story! It was so moist, rich, perfectly spiced and sweet. It had nuts and cranberry which gave the cake another texture, the tangy yet not too sweet thick layer of cream cheese. I loved it so much every bite made me so happy. Definitely a must try if you love carrot cake and it’s one of the best I had!

Special Filter Coffee (RM 19)

Latte (RM 13)

I had a latte (9oz/280ml) , it had such a beautiful, well crafted latte art, I'm not the best at describing coffee but it was a good cup of latte! It was strong and had the right amount of bitterness for me + the cup was super huge so major YES! The other coffee was a special filter coffee that I forgot what blend it was because I wasn’t the one who drank it, it was a special one and wasn’t on the main menu! The barista recommended it to my dad but we weren't a big fan of it, but I think that's cause of our personal coffee preference and taste! I’m no coffee expert all I can say it’s good and VCR serves really really good quality coffee!

During my first visit, I wanted to order their French Toast but I forgot about it!!! When I saw another table ordered it and that was when I remember, I almost screamed thinking HOW COULD I FORGET?! But my second tummy was too full by then so I just waited for my next visit to try it!

French Toast (RM 19)

I went for my second visit recently at the Bangsar branch! and of course I remember to order the French Toast this time!!! So many people have hyped up this french toast to me, telling me it's the best so I had super high expectations for it! The brioche french toast was super fluffy, but was lacking that crisp on the outside! It came with an espresso no churn ice cream, giant biscuit crumbles, raspberry compote and mocha sauce. Hmm I really love the compote cause it gave it the refreshing element to the dish, however the other components were a bit lacking for me, I couldn't taste the espresso or coffee flavour in the ice cream and there wasn't enough mocha sauce for me! It was a bit of a let down if I'm being honest cause it wasn't as good as expected. I read reviews of it and it's all good so I'm not sure maybe it was just that day that it wasn't served the best? :( I had the same dishes as I had before during my second visit, and I had a better experience in the Galloway branch and think the food is better there instead of Bangsar.

Latte (RM 13) & Iced Mocha (RM 15)

The coffee was still as amazing, the latte was perfect and the Iced Mocha was really good, the perfect balance of chocolate and coffee, more towards the bitter side + wasn't sweet at all which I like!

Cakes displayed at counter

Even with my not so great second experience, I still love VCR! I would recommend going to their Galloway branch but take note parking there could be a headache! Do try it for yourself if you haven't, cause I personally think it is still one of the best places to have brunch and coffee in town! I can't wait again to try other items on the menu hehe.
